40 Powerful Quotes and Thought for the day with meaning

By reading this article, you can start with great powerful thought for the day, which was written by famous Authors & Writers who may have been such a great example for some People of the 19th century with Heartfelt Gratitude. Their principles of gratitude is a gift of life. I hope you will find these inspirational quotes useful.

We speak not only to tell other people what we think but to tell ourselves what we think. Speech is a part of thought.

― Oliver Sacks

Meaningful Thoughts for the day

1. “Never give up on what you want to do. The person with big dreams is more powerful than one with all the facts.”

The people with big dreams are the most motivated ones. They would do whatever it would take to make their dreams come true. Even if it seems like the odds are against them, they never give up. Just look at successful entrepreneurs. Some of them even came from humble beginnings and encountered complex challenges. Still, they endured and tackled the challenges head-on.

2. “If you want to lift yourself, lift someone else.”

Picture yourself as a person who has many problems, perhaps personal problems and problems society has created for you. These problems have made it difficult or impossible for you to succeed in any way, so you feel like a failure. In short, you have no self-esteem. You want to lift yourself, certainly, but what should you do?

You have a few choices. You can do nothing and live with these failures. You can do something that, for whatever reason, has little likelihood of success.

3. “The eye sees only what the mind is prepared to comprehend.”

The visual scene is full of so much information; we cannot analyse everything at the same time…Our results show that shifts of visual attention precede rapid eye movements, improving accuracy in identifying objects in the visual field and speeding our future actions to those objects…And that’s actually how you can tell imagery from a real visual experience because if you move your eyes, things change on the retina. If you move your eyes while you’re imagining, while you’re hallucinating, nothing changes. So if you want to know if you’re dreaming or not, you should move your eyes or your body.

4. “There is no security in this world—only opportunity.”

The only time people change is when they are confronted by strong leadership, crises, or both. Even though all progress results from the change, very few people like change; it rocks the boat. It upsets the apple cart. And it feels uncomfortable. So most people spend most of their lives chasing after “security.” They’re chasing after emotional, relational, financial, or occupational security, but they never seem to get enough. Of course, they never will. General Douglas MacArthur said it quite well. He said, “There is no security on this earth, only opportunity.” If you’re a leader, a leader of change, you need to grasp the whole meaning of MacArthur’s comment. He’s saying you may never find a way to make people like change. After all, most people don’t want it. They want security.

5. “Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is a success.”

The above quote is attributed to Henry Ford. While these unprecedented times have forced us apart, we remain engaged and united in a common goal: to bring people together for collaboration, creativity, and celebration. It is you, our valued planners, clients, and partners, who have supported Benchmark’s growth over the years, and we take great pride in these relationships. While there remain many unknowns, we are all aligned in the belief that we are stronger together; and together, we will overcome. As we begin to look ahead to brighter days, I am encouraged by the resolve of our teams, our partners, and our industry. The exact resolution has guided our efforts in developing a plan of action to help accelerate the recovery efforts. A plan to aid you in converting business in the short term while also financially supporting your ability to advance future opportunities.

6. “Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has yet to come. We have only today left, So Let us begin.”

This quote from Mother Teresa is packed full of truth. A lot of people like to blame their past for their current situation. However, one should know that nothing is dependent on the past. What you have to do is to give your best in the present. You cannot sit idly and blame your history for all the bad things in your life. Instead of that, what you have to do is give all the efforts in the present time. It is the only way to achieve the desired success in your life. You have to understand that blaming your past will not help you in any way, as yesterday is already gone.

7. “You have to fight through some bad days to earn the best days of your life.”

It comes from all the great motivational quotes with Meaning that the horrible days make the good days that much sweeter and give you a meaning of life. Life is not just one steady tempo; it comes with ups and downs. Some days seem like a struggle from when you wake up until you close your eye and go to sleep, but these days are what you pay to earn the best days. When you keep an attitude of gratitude and are determined to handle whatever life throws at you, even your worst days won’t seem so bad. On days when things seem dark and a fight to make it to the end, it is essential to remember that there is always a light on the other side. God never gives you more than you can handle, even though it may seem like it, and you must experience sorrow to know true joy. Everything in life is balanced, and your bad days will be few and far between when you have a positive mindset, and you remember that things will get better eventually.

8. “Do something every day to move toward your goal. Get going and keep going. Just do it.”

So many of us appear to have goals that never materialise. That is to say, we all have lofty ambitions that are deeply personal to us. They could be passions, ideas, dreams, or aspirations that have been cooped up in our minds for many years. Things we’d like to create, something we’d like to build, or things that we’d like to have a shot at! The next thing we know, though, is that the years have flown by, and when it comes to our goals and other meaningful items on our bucket list, we’ve made absolutely no progress. On the contrary, we’re more likely to have been quietly consumed by years of inactivity, complacency and procrastination. Any good intentions or new year resolutions to get the wheels turning may have gone down in flames as life’s distractions take over.

9. “If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself.”

During these strangest times, we have found that many have just wanted to talk and share ideas. Often it is as much as trying to understand some of the very confusing messages that are being publicised. It has made life very difficult to understand. It is a challenging landscape to understand, and many feel disconnected and many who do not fully understand the key trends and influences at play. There has never been a more critical time to come together, share ideas, thoughts and discussion. We have found that we have been hosting online forums three times a week that many have located value if only to reassure at this strangest of times. We have found that many have just wanted to connect and be part of something that can help them understand some of the many trends that are taking place. Many have wanted a sounding board for thoughts and plans. Many have enjoyed just a confidante to talk to.

10. “When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be.

Have you ever tried “letting go” of the past, whether it be an experience, a person or a dark memory? Learning to let go is a challenge I face. Sometimes, it seems like an impossibility. I’m not sure what to make of Lao Tzu’s quote, which is why I love it. It makes me think. So, as per usual, I thought I’d kick off the week by sharing my thoughts with all of you. Of course, I’d love to hear your interpretation of this quote, so don’t be afraid to comment at the bottom of the post!

11. “Never be too busy to meet someone new.

Meeting someone new is always a good idea. It’s almost like knowing a new world, new psychology, and sometimes a new culture. So, if someone new is trying to get in touch with you, you shouldn’t be too busy. If you meet someone new, there is a possibility that you will be able to learn new things. For instance, if that person is coming from a different part of the world, you will learn their traditions and culture. In that way, you will comprehend that there are numerous colourful cultures in this world. So, acknowledge the fact that meeting a new person is always a good idea. To be precise, maybe that new person will pull you out of your comfort zone and will allow you to live a new life.

12. “You can’t fall if you don’t climb. But there’s no joy in living your whole life on the ground.

It is so easy to live in your routine life. And it is so scary to go outside your comfort zone. But you should. If you want to achieve extraordinary results, you should do beautiful things. Go outside your comfort zone if you’re going to change something in your life! Enjoy your life! Be happy!

13. “Don’t base your decisions on the advice of those who won’t have to deal with the results.

Whenever you plan to make a decision, you will find that numerous people will advise you. However, it will be the best option for you to make your decision of your own. Make sure not to base your decision on the advice of other people. You have to understand that they don’t have to face the consequences of the result. So, you are the best person who knows the exact situation. Hence you have to make the decision based on your situation.

14. “Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you.

In every corner of the world, people know who Oprah Winfrey is because, true to her word, she has focused on what excites her, and she has certainly felt the power that comes with it. You might not be able to do all that Oprah Winfrey has done; you probably don’t want to, but you can harness the power of passion for increasing your energy levels. You really will feel better, be more energetic and live healthier when you pursue your passions in life. When you let desire increase your energy levels, the greater your love for the things you do, keep gratitude.

15. “I have learned over the years that when one’s mind is made up, this diminishes fear.

The greatest opposer of any success or accomplishment is fear; fear wins the crown from the most talented but frightened and performs it to the underdog daring. Fear is a thing of the mind, and you can ‘still’ it with action. People like shielding a lot, even if it comes at the cost of some freedom. Why do we let fear hold us in a state of triumph and repulse to make the commitments that we know will increase our outcome? We all learn early in life to head off risks, and we persist into the same learned guides grown-ups. We prevent going to a place of joy and happiness to keep from failure or the risk of falling. When fears begin to take over your life and affect your performance, they turn into a problem. Let us start finding a dream or goal calling you from across a cavity of a doubt. Isn’t that better than just dallying for something to take place? Let us overcome fear and start chasing the great desires again. You have to make up your mind that fear is the crown of your head, nothing else. Put off the peak. Make a difference. Stay motivated.

16. “Let today be the day you learn the grace of letting go and the power of moving on.

All of us go through some unwanted situations at least once in our life. During those times, we feel like everything is finished. We become mentally depressed and frustrated. Most of the times, these situations take place when someone manipulates us psychologically. During those times, the best thing that we can do is to let those people go from our life. Well, we can understand that it is quite a hard decision. However, during that time, you can consider it to be the best decision. You have no idea what the power of moving on is. It not only makes you mentally strong but also plays a significant role in constructing your character. Besides, it will also help you to increase your confidence. Your confidence is one of the most important things when it comes to success.

Moreover, if you can let people go, it will help you to enjoy your life. You will feel necessary in your life. To be specific, it will signify the fact that you are giving priority to your own life. Well, you must learn how to say no to a person. Sometimes people will try to manipulate you and make you do what they want. But you have to be pretty careful and comprehend the signs of manipulation.

17. “Nothing is as important as passion. No matter what you want to do with your life, be passionate.

Passion is one of the most powerful tools a human can ever have. You can complete doing a task even if you don’t have enough power or don’t like doing it. But if you have a passion for doing something, you can put more extra effort. You will be more dedicated and motivated, resulting in a well-done task. And after completing that task, you will feel happy and accomplished. It is a different feeling doing a thing that you like and you don’t like. Follow your passion. Every one of us has power. Every one of us desires to do an item that we are passionate about. When doing something that you are passionate about, that’s a great success!

18. “If you do not tell the truth about yourself, you cannot tell it about other people.

The above statement talks about the honesty level one has in displaying to others, whether personal or professional. Telling the truth about us signifies the thoughts and actions, whether they are in a right or wrong direction, and their impact on others. one should be truthful about himself when doing activities implies that he has to perform the proper duties. If clever people with a bad attitude is committing a mistake, they don’t have any right to blame or point others when they are doing anything wrong.

19. “Life is effortless, but we insist on making it complicated.

This quote by Confucius got me thinking. If you would’ve asked me about this before, my answer probably would’ve been that those who say it is simple are fools because how can life be anything but a mess, the source of anxiety and complications. But now that I’ve thought about this long and hard, I would say- it is humans are complicated and not life. We are the ones who tend to overthink everything and make mountains out of a molehill. We expect the people to understand our needs without voicing them as if those people have been gifted with telepathy. While trying on a dress, we are the ones who think of whether every person would approve of it before approving it ourselves. Before eating any comfort food, we are the ones who calculate all the calories and the exercises we’ll have to do the day after. We are the ones who always try to read between the lines. And then we are the ones who say life is hard. And sometimes, all this pretence and fakeness makes us yearn for that illusory and elusive simplicity.

20. “It takes a strong fish to swim against the current. Even a dead one can float with it.

The world is full of people who follow some rules, morals, and principles others have set. I guess this happens because it is easier, as it allows you to stay out of trouble. However, if you want to be different, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to break these rules humans share for ages now; you must come up with new, fresh ideas, which will make a difference.

21. “If you know, let others light their candles in it.

The quote by Margaret Fuller is such an excellent metaphor for the spread of knowledge. By “let[ting] others light their candles”, according to your understanding, she means that you should communicate and spread your knowledge. By enlightening or igniting the readers’ minds with this newfound knowledge, they will alter their thinking by considering this new perspective.

22. “It’s meaning in your life that causes you to have ideas that will help people.

New research is finding that being kind and giving to others can make our lives feel more meaningful. The idea that helping others is part of a meaningful life has been around for thousands of years. Aristotle wrote that finding happiness and fulfilment is achieved “by loving rather than in being loved.” According to psychologist Carol Ryff, who reviewed the writings of numerous philosophers throughout history, relationships with others are “a central feature of a positive, well-lived life.” Yet today, many of us seem to be struggling to find meaning by gathering up achievements, spending so much time at work that we’re cut off from other people.

23. “A mind is like a parachute. It doesn’t work if it isn’t open.

Frank Zappa rightly says that a MIND is like a PARACHUTE, and it doesn’t work if it is not open. Here, Frank Zappa compares human MIND with the PARACHUTE and says that the mind also does not work unless we open it. That means he is trying to tell us to be open-minded to learn something from others. As the parachute is used by SKY JUMPER, PILOT and celestial body within the atmosphere control their motion towards the earth. Seemingly Frank Zappa is trying to tell us that a closed mind may lead us towards the failure or reason for our sorrow and suffering, as a fast parachute may account for losing a pilot’s safe landing. Having an open mindset and welcoming other ideas to enter in mind will help us grow, prosper, and win in our lives. The human mind should be available to fill with wisdom and knowledge as the canopy of a parachute is opened to fill up with wind to control its motion for shape landing. So, we must be open-minded people, always keep our mind open to learn and look at everything in a broad mindset to prosper.

24. “Going halfway never gets you anywhere. Go all the way or don’t go at all.

If you are planning for your goal, you have to go with complete dedication. If you are not dedicated enough to your destination, you can never achieve your desire. To be precise, doing half-hearted works will do no good to you. The only way to reach your target is by doing your work dedicatedly and passionately. There is no such thing called shortcuts. If you look for alternatives or opt for the shortcuts, there is no chance that you will reach your desired destination. Therefore, always try to give your hundred per cent while you are in the process of achieving your dreams.

25. “Champions keep playing until they get it right.

Please think of how many people quit playing before they become a champion. Perhaps they might have made it if they just would have kept playing, making adjustments, and getting better at their craft. If you want to experience more success, all you have to do is keep practising, keep playing against better opponents, and keep learning all that you can. With enough perseverance, you’ll find that you become a champion because you’ve spent time “in the trenches, and now you know your game better than anyone else, and you are dubbed a champion. This is not just applicable to sports but to several areas of personal development. Which areas of your life do you want to become a champion in?

26. “Don’t be discouraged. It’s often the last key in the bunch that opens the lock.

Maybe you are working quite hard for a long time to achieve your goal. However, due to some situations or issues, you are failing to reach your desired destination. Well, one can understand that it is pretty frustrating as well as discouraging. During those times, you may feel like leaving everything. You also feel like everything is finished. But the fact is something different. You should never be discouraged in your life. Or else there is a possibility that you will never accomplish your goal even if you are too close to it. For instance, there is a possibility that you are pretty close to your destination, but due to frustration, you stop working on it. And one day, you will regret the fact that you were pretty close to your success.

27. “Don’t let small minds convince you that your dreams are too big.

People can tell you whatever they want, but the truth is, the one person, and the only person in charge of determining your destiny…is YOU. No seriously. What someone else says to you does not matter. If there are negative people in your life, leave them behind because they serve no purpose in contributing to your happiness and dreams. I’ve found this to be so helpful in my own life. If I don’t like how someone treats me, I immediately take myself out of the situation. I honestly think that in this world, we all need to treat one another with kindness and respect because at the end of the day, you’ve got to remember that we’re not just “doing” business to get things done…we’re working with other human beings as a team to create amazing things. Surround yourself with people that inspire you to be a better you. Rid your life of jealousy and replace it with an open mind ready to learn.

28. “Never look down on anybody unless you’re helping them up.

To Follow and create a good society for Personal Lives, it is essential for us to show respect to every individual and not look down on poor, bad-looking, or different people. We should only look down when we are moving to help someone.

29. “Always make a total effort, even when the odds are against you.

Giving it your all is hard enough, but when the odds are stacked against you, it becomes very tempting just to pack it up and go home. But if the odds aren’t in your favour, you have to give it as much effort as possible if you hope to come out on top. Only you know if you’re giving your real action, so this becomes a battle with yourself more than anything else. Learning to get the most out of yourself is a trick that the most successful achievers have mastered.

30. “Happiness is not the absence of problems; it’s the ability to deal with them.

Problems are not why a person lives a miserable and challenging life; most of the time, it’s a matter of perspective. Because often, the majority of people let problems defeat them through feelings of anger, fear and anxiety. These negative feelings paralyse a person to move forward and take a step in resolving the issue. On the other hand, perspective is also why there are people who succeed despite struggles and difficulties. It’s because those who best know how to resolve or manage problems when it arises. They don’t let the negative emotion of anger, doubt, fear or anxiety interfere with their ability to think of solutions and take the next step.

31. “Happiness is not something ready-made. It comes from your actions.

All the people in the whole world are searching for happiness. All of us are looking for this one thing. All of us want to be happy, fulfil our dreams, and keep the people happy surrounding us. However, it seems we do not find happiness. Sometimes, there are miserable situations that we cannot get over. These situations break us; we feel there is nothing that can make us happy. We felt devastated and broke, and we feel like we don’t have the right to be happy. However, Happiness is not something readymade. It is not something that you can buy from the market. You have to create it. Your actions are going to describe your happiness.

32. “The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little extra.

It’s not that people who do great things are heroically great people and the rest of us shmoes are the grey residue stuck at the bottom of the ordinary barrel. It’s just that they are willing to go a few steps further than the rest of us, turning ordinary effort into the extraordinary effort, ordinary resolve into extraordinary resolve and ordinary persistence into extraordinary persistence. This, of course, often produces extraordinary results.

33. “If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.

No matter how brave the person is, all of us have our own fears. It might stem from some unresolved issues that we might have had as we grew up, or it might be from some experience that had shaken us. No matter what the fear is, it is important to confront it. Many of us ignore our fears and fool ourselves by thinking that we actually are absolutely fearless. Others let their fears consume them. In any case, it is important to accept and face our fears. Overthinking about it and trying to find a solution will never work.

34. “Little minds are tamed and subdued by misfortune, but great minds rise above them.

The people with a great passion and project are the ones who know what they are performing and why they are creating it. With both, we have direction and a driving force. If we have no purpose, what will we suppose to accomplish? If we have a purpose, like helping others, we will surely get something done sooner or later one day.

35. “A successful man can lay a firm foundation with the bricks that others throw at him.

A successful man is knocked down by people several times and overcome challenges with true potential. Life throws obstacles and takes trials; sometimes, problems are much bigger than our capacity to handle them. But if hitting star were so easy, then everybody would do that. This is how we can change the mindset and set ourselves apart from the crowd by fighting for the hardship of Life. In the crowd, we may meet the people who wish the best for us, and others will pray for our failures.

36. “If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.

This quote by Maya Angelou is powerful. If you can change something you’re complaining about it, then you better take action and rid yourself of whatever it is. If you can’t change it, then perhaps, that’s the universe telling you that you need to change your outlook. Because without changing the outlook, you will allow it to bother you forever. For each negative, pick up a positive and only concentrate on that. The true message always seeps through; you just have to acknowledge it.

37. “It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.

What does that mean? I’m not sure ‘educated’ is the word I would use (it might be an artefact of the translation), but I would consider it a measure of how open-minded a person is. Can you think about an idea, roll it around in your head, and consider it? Do you just accept an idea because it sounds interesting, because your friends like it, or someone you trust said it? In my mind, that is what the quote is about. Someone exposes you to a new idea. Do you reject it out of hand, accept it blindly, or entertain the idea, exploring its strengths, weaknesses, and applicability to the situation? Do you test its merits and adopt it if the new thought works better than your prior thinking?

38. “You know you’re in love when you don’t want to fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.

I imagine most of us have been there at some point in our lives. They walk in, and the world simply stops. No one else exists. Not one thing is more important than they are. They are the entire focus of your world. In my view, that is what this quote is about. Where reality is so great, so wonderful, that even your dreams pale by comparison. That’s a wonderful place to be, and Love is a great thing in which to find yourself. It never seems to last long enough, but the feeling is grand! This is an emotional state that some pursue and abandon their partner as soon as the feeling fades. While the quote doesn’t address that point, I believe it is short-sighted. All intense emotional states are, by definition, it seems, temporary.

39. “Life doesn’t get easier or more forgiving; we get stronger and more resilient.

We do the best to create lives of meaning that we can sustain and sustain; life is often challenging. Curveballs come our way. Modern life is not always easy, and most of us experience stress. At the very least, we are pretty consistently asked to manage stressors. Our vulnerabilities “act out” when we are under stress. So, if you already experience challenges organizing your time and projects, prioritizing tasks or focusing on the essential but less interesting requirements of daily life such as paying the bills or doing the laundry, or if procrastination is one of your go-to methods of functioning, these will all be exacerbated when you’re under stress.

These were some tremendous meaningful thoughts for the day that will surely make you believe in yourself. When we walk with gratitude, we do not walk with arrogance and conceit and egotism, but rather with a spirit of thanksgiving that is becoming to us and will bless our lives. We should all be thankful to the Almighty for His wonderful blessings upon us. We have all that this great age has to offer in the world. How lucky can we be? We ought to be grateful, to be thankful, to walk with appreciation and respect for the blessings of life and happiness that we enjoy.

What is gratitude?

“Gratitude is the very essence of worship thanksgiving to the God of Heaven, Who has given us all that we have that is good.”

40. Don’t wait. The time will never be just right.

Napoleon Hill

My thing with fans is, it’s always about being really good to them and taking the time to take every picture. If there are 300 people, you should take 300 pictures – you shouldn’t take 250 because then fifty people will go home sad. Why would you do that?

Ansel Elgort

It’s so sad, actually, how teachers and parents tell their kids, ‘You’re never gonna be anything.’

Solange Knowles

Chelsea Handler

It’s sad how people want to see us females go against each other. Never been for that. Never will.

Jo Sykes made these incredible leather jackets: the leather was like butter. I had one, but I lost it at a wedding in Ibiza. It was so sad; I’ve not been able to replace.

Poppy Delevingne

Ben Stein

Marina Abramovic

Debbie Reynolds

Andrew Lloyd Webber

Gia Coppola

Parker Posey

It is sad that so many designers don’t know how to make. CAD software can make a bad design look palatable! It is sad that four years can be spent on a 3D design course without making anything! People who are great at designing and making have a great advantage.

Jonathan Ive

It makes one sad to see the sell-out of President Fox; really, it makes one sad. How sad that the president of a people like the Mexicans lets himself become the puppy dog of the empire.

Hugo Chavez

I will be very sad and worried if the imperialist government was calling me a great democratic man.

Hugo Chavez

Of course it’s true: the public want to see young people – young people are the people who go to the cinema. It’s a sad fact of life, but you’ve got to accept it and not whine about it.

Joan Collins

The sad truth is that most of my husbands turned out to be convincing liars.

Joan Collins

Western governments have generally tried to contain genocide by appeasing its architects. But the sad record of the last century shows that the walls the United States tries to build around genocidal societies almost inevitably shatter.

Samantha Power

It makes me very sad. Everyone’s afraid of each other – Jews are afraid of Palestinians, Palestinians are afraid of Jews. Everywhere I see fear, not understanding. Reason went out of the window a long time ago.

Miriam Margolyes

Dierks Bentley

I’m part of the party, getting the crowd fired up, singing songs, pouring drinks, whatever it takes to get them to have a good time. When I walk into the meet-and-greet, someone’s always going to have a story, a sad story or a happy story.

Dierks Bentley

A very sad moment for me was when my parents separated – a lot of crying, ‘It’s tragic, we’re now a broken family, blah blah blah blah blah’ – although my psychological problems stopped. I actually felt healthier.

Whit Stillman

David Cassidy

Watching an entrepreneur fail is sad, but watching him fail from lack of nerve is tragic.

Steve Blank

I love ‘The Sportswriter’ by Richard Ford. Ford really captures for me the bittersweetness of the quietly suffering American man. It’s stoic, sad, and really beautiful.

Mark Ruffalo

Metal isn’t necessarily aggressive. There’s metal that’s contemplative, there’s metal that’s sad, and there’s metal that’s exuberant. No genre is limited in what it can express.

John Darnielle

No matter how old and glorious the models, sad indeed is the woman who sees fashion as a means of self-expression rather than an agent of social control.

Julie Burchill

It’s a sad commentary on our time – to use a phrase much favored by my late father – that people increasingly celebrate Christmas Day by going to the movies.

Michael Dirda

Sad to say, multi-tasking is beyond me. I read one book at a time all the way through. If I’m reviewing the book, I have to write the review before I start reading any other book. I especially hate it when the phone rings and interrupts my train of thought.

Michael Dirda

Most of the time, we keep looking outside and feeling sad about what others have. Those are mere excuses.

Yami Gautam

Amy Purdy

I live on a train. I know – what a sad thing to admit. I am the New-Age Willy Loman. But there it is.

Christopher Buckley

Sad Story Quotes

It’s a sad indication of where Washington has come, where policy differences almost necessarily become questions of integrity. I came to Washington in the late ’70s, and people had the ability in the past to have intense policy differences but didn’t feel the need to question the other person’s character.

Eric Holder

I was going to McDonald’s and Taco Bell every day. The kids behind the counter knew me – it wouldn’t even faze them. Or I’d sit up at Denny’s or Big Boy and just eat by myself. It was sad. I got so heavy that people started to not recognize me.

Don’t ever let the other stuff get in the way of your inherent skills as a kick-butt storyteller. Move the reader, make them happy and sad and excited and scared. Make them stare into space after they’ve put the book down, thinking about the tale that’s become a part of them.

James Dashner

New diseases like SARS and bird flu cause anxiety in the community. People get worried, some to the extent that it even affects their health. You feel very sad, and yet you must carry on and maintain your cool in very trying and difficult moments. You have to tough it out.

Margaret Chan

My mother, I suppose, is still a main figure in my life because her life was so sad and unfair, and she so brave, but also because she was determined to make me into the Sunday-school-recitation little girl I was, from the age of seven or so, fighting not to be.

Alice Munro

The question I love to get asked is: ‘What’s the hardest part of your job?’ And literally, the answer is probably real sad, but it’s to just to be me. Like, it’s really hard, because I think people, you know, have a set idea of what a pop star should be.

Kelly Clarkson

When you socially neglect a people, when you economically abandon a people, when you transfer wealth from them to the well-to-do, what are a people going to do? They’re going to respond with very sad forms of despair, and that’s true for everybody – I don’t care what color you are.

Cornel West

Sad music, I always thought, is more beautiful than other music. But at the same time, I am in my personal life a very happy guy. I have a sense of humor. I am not the kind of depressed guy all the time brooding. No. I am very enthusiastic about things.

Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu

If it was up to me, I would just wear jeans and t-shirts, even to red carpets, but then no one would photograph me, so that would make me very sad. So you know, I’ve gotta keep up with the rest of the female population and sometimes try a little harder.

I am firmly of the opinion that women who make a lot of effort to hang onto their looks in middle age (unless they are beauties, entertainers or prostitutes) are rather sad, as one should surely have something more substantial to recommend one by this time, such as kindness or cleverness.

Julie Burchill

There are more than 300,000 families in the Gulf region that lost their homes and are waiting for peace of mind. The hurricane exposed the sad reality of poverty in America. We saw, in all its horrific detail, the vulnerabilities of living in inadequate housing and the heartbreak of losing one’s home.

Harry Connick, Jr.

If people who cherish freedom, who know the importance of mutual respect and are aware of the imperative necessity to establish a constructive and critical debate, if these people are not ready to speak out, to be more committed and visible, then we can expect sad, painful tomorrows. The choice is ours.

Tariq Ramadan

Creation is a sustained period of bliss, even though the subject can still be very sad. Because there’s the triumph of coming through and understanding that you have, and that you did it the way only you could do it. You didn’t do it the way somebody told you to do it.

Alice Walker

I’ve met so many fans of daytime television who’ve watched the shows with their moms and grandmas and feel like they’ve known the characters their whole lives. It’s sad for them to have to say goodbye to their favorite soaps and characters. We don’t want that to happen to the ‘Days’ fans.

Alison Sweeney

I think everything is going to be devastatingly sad – when the phone rings, I know somebody in my family’s been hurt, somebody’s going to die. I’m sure a therapist would go, ‘That’s not a good way to live,’ but every time it’s not that bad thing, I’m so thankful and appreciative.

Sandra Bullock

I didn’t know what to expect when we first started touring behind ‘Southeastern’ because you don’t want to lull anybody to sleep or lose their attention. But it’s really been incredible how the crowds seem to be just as excited for the slow, sad songs as they are for the old rockers.

Jason Isbell

When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy. When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.

Khalil Gibran

The true artist is not proud: he unfortunately sees that art has no limits; he feels darkly how far he is from the goal, and though he may be admired by others, he is sad not to have reached that point to which his better genius only appears as a distant, guiding sun.

Ludwig van Beethoven

Ten years ago, I still feared loss enough to abandon myself in order to keep things stable. I’d smile when I was sad, pretend to like people who appalled me. What I now know is that losses aren’t cataclysmic if they teach the heart and soul their natural cycle of breaking and healing.

Martha Beck

Tony Benn and I were very close, very close friends for 30, 40 years. We talked to each other a great deal, and we were great friends. And I was with him shortly before he died, talking about prospects of the world and prospects for peace. And I’m very sad that he’s gone.

Jeremy Corbyn

I like happy endings in movies. I think life has a happy ending. When it’s all said and done, it’s all something worthwhile, and I want my movies to reflect that. There are enough things to be sad about. When you pop in a movie, let the message be one that’s one of hope.

Jon Favreau

When I go in the studio, I put myself into a place where I’m feeling something I want to portray, which is often being sad, lonely. But as soon as I’m starting to make something, it’s when I’m the happiest. Ever. I think that comes out at the same time, so there’s that juxtaposition.

Jamie xx

When I was starting out, I saw it as something that was definitely going to end. Every time I came to New York for fashion week or to interview someone, I was so sad going back home because I thought, ‘These things don’t get to last.’ That’s sort of the narrative of young success.

Tavi Gevinson

It’s important to get well-rounded right off the bat. A lot of experienced dancers can get pigeonholed into one thing. I’ve been hired for a lot of different gigs simply because I can do a lot of different things with different levels of dancers. And it’s sad to me that some dancers don’t do more.

Mandy Moore

It is a sad but undeniable reality that people have died in the line of duty since the earliest days of the United Nations. The first was Ole Bakke, a Norwegian member of the United Nations guard detachment, shot and killed in Palestine in 1948. The toll since then has included colleagues at all levels.

Ban Ki-moon

The sad reality is that there are no purely domestic issues in Israel. Issues that would be dealt with by municipalities in other countries – such as how to deal with a dangerous bridge or how to resolve conflicts between religious and secular bus riders – become major international issues when they occur in Israel.

Alan Dershowitz

I am pretty weird – as weird as in my videos. The only difference is Lilly is not a performer, and Superwoman is. So Superwoman is very fearless. You’ll never see her nervous. You’ll never see her sad. But Lilly is a human. She is the person behind Superwoman, who gets sad and tired sometimes.

Lilly Singh

If I could be more vague I’d write more about people in my life, but I hate hurting feelings or making people feel uncomfortable. I’ve done that before. Unless they’re sad songs. Those get finished fast, but the mean ones often end up at the back of the bottom drawer and it’s probably for the best.

Caitlin Rose

‘Eyes Wide Open’ took shape from two real life events straight from my own past. One was the sad suicide of my young nephew, a troubled kid, who was found at the bottom of a landmark cliff in central California. The second was a chance encounter forty years ago with none other than, ahem, Charles Manson!

Andrew Gross

I write entirely in English; Tagalog chauvinists chide me for this. I feel no guilt in doing so. But I am sad that I cannot write in my native Ilokano. History demanded this; if it isn’t English I am using now, I would most probably be writing in Spanish like Rizal, or even German or Japanese.

F. Sionil Jose

I’m sad to see celluloid go, there’s no doubt. But, you know, nitrate went, by the way, in 1971. If you ever saw a nitrate print of a silent film and then saw an acetate print, you’d see a big difference, but nobody remembers anymore. The acetate print is what we have. Maybe. Now it’s digital.

Martin Scorsese

That’s what is so great about being able to record a 13-song album. You can do a very eclectic group of songs. You do have some almost pop songs in there, but you do have your traditional country, story songs. You have your ballads, your happy songs, your sad songs, your love songs, and your feisty songs.

Reba McEntire

You can think you’re living in the moment and you’re thankful, but when somebody comes face to face with you and says, ‘I just lost my child,’ or ‘I have months to live, and thank you…’ I’m of course sad for them, but I’m thankful that I gave them a gift and they’re giving me a gift.

Tig Notaro

To be honest, I’m a little upset these days. My family has been exposed to the media. Some people break into our house. My ex-girlfriend’s photos are circulating online. To say that these are things I need to endure for the sake of celebrity… that’s sad. I want to respectfully request that my private life remain private.

Song Joong-ki

The first series I wrote, ‘L.A. Candy,’ was always meant to be a three-book series, so when I started out it was all outlined that way and by the time I was done with the third book, I had become so involved and the process and the stories, I was a little bit sad to be done.

Lauren Conrad

Scientists habitually moan that the public doesn’t understand them. But they complain too much: public ignorance isn’t peculiar to science. It’s sad if some citizens can’t tell a proton from a protein. But it’s equally sad if they’re ignorant of their nation’s history, can’t speak a second language, or can’t find Venezuela or Syria on a map.

Martin Rees

Until the age of five, my parents spoke to me in Chinese or a combination of Chinese and English, but they didn’t force me to speak Mandarin. In retrospect, this was sad, because they believed that my chance of doing well in America hinged on my fluency in English. Later, as an adult, I wanted to learn Chinese.

Amy Tan

The tree I had in the garden as a child, my beech tree, I used to climb up there and spend hours. I took my homework up there, my books, I went up there if I was sad, and it just felt very good to be up there among the green leaves and the birds and the sky.

Jane Goodall

Being sad and being depressed are two different things. Also, people going through depression don’t look so, while someone sad will look sad. The most common reaction is, ‘How can you be depressed? You have everything going for you. You are the supposed number one heroine and have a plush home, car, movies… What else do you want?’

Deepika Padukone

I always think of the live show first, where the song is gonna go in the show. That’s why they aren’t sad songs. When I play, I want to make people happy, not sad. It’s such a pleasure for me to do what I do, and I want other people to feel some form of that pleasure, too.

Jason Mraz

What makes me sad about school is that the people who are unhappy are unhappy because they don’t believe it will change. And I just want to say: ‘It does! High school ends and it’s over.’ I will tell anyone that it’s OK to be unhappy at school, make lots of mistakes and then it will be over.

Alice Englert

I was a little boy singing sad songs, about 9 or 10 years old in the woods. I listened to my voice coming back to me. It was as high as you could go. I dreamed of being famous as a singer when I was on those cotton fields. I wanted to see the world and meet people.

Percy Sledge

Every day, when I am working with my boys, I tell them as long as you put in your best efforts, I am there to back you. But the day I find your energy flagging on the field, the day I find you have not put in your best, that’s when I will be really upset and sad.

Nita Ambani

For me, it’s sad to say, but I would probably have a spiritual marriage but not a legal marriage, because I think so much about marriage starts to become about finances. It has nothing to do with God or feelings or the romantic side of marriage. It’s about who owns what, who gets what? So what’s the point?

Andie MacDowell

I don’t think I could compare myself to Macaulay Culkin, because we’re pretty much two different kinds of actors. He’s done a lot of comedy. He does mostly just comedy like ‘Uncle Buck’ and ‘Home Alone’ and ‘Home Alone 2.’ And I’ve done a lot of different stuff, like sad movies, like the movie about the kid with AIDS.

Brian Bonsall

Having read my share of tell-alls over the year, including some that were passed off as autobiographies, I mostly feel sad – sometimes for the writer and sometimes for all the people in his way. I hope that the process of writing the tell-all gives some release and closure on what clearly was an unpleasant and unfulfilling life experience.

Brad Feld

‘I Know You Care’ is about my dad. And I haven’t seen him for a long, long time. And my parents divorced when I was really young. And I guess I just wanted a – it was my way of saying that I wasn’t bitter or angry anymore. I was just sad and just felt like something was missing.

Ellie Goulding

I’ve seen a couple white girls coming to my concerts wearing head wraps, and I think they look so cute. It’s kind of sad to see that people are really into separation, trying to separate everybody and making a clear division of ‘us against you,’ even with fashion. That sucks. It’s not the way the world is supposed to be.

I’ve had tons of bullies who would call me retarded, even on my Facebook page. It’s sad and it really hurts. I want to tell people not to use the word. Don’t say your friend’s retarded when they do something foolish. If you have a disability, keep working hard. Whatever it takes, do it, and don’t be mean to people.

Lauren Potter

The Holy Spirit can be with you always and guide you back to Him, but in order to enjoy the benefits of this holy gift, you must truly receive it, and then you must use it in your life. How sad it would be to be given such a precious gift and then set it aside and never use it.

Margaret D. Nadauld

What if the Soviet intervention was a blessing in disguise? It saved the myth that if the Soviets were not to intervene, there would have been some flowering authentic democratic socialism and so on. I’m a little bit more of a pessimist there. I think that the Soviets – it’s a very sad lesson – by their intervention, saved the myth.

Slavoj Zizek

It takes a long time for a country to build a strong base in science, but only a short time to destroy it. Germany was a sad example. It was a world leader in the sciences for more than a century, until its science base was demolished during the Nazi era, and the country ceded its position to the United States.

Torsten Wiesel

Ladies and gentlemen, it is with great sadness that I announce that I will resign as Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs. I am sad because I love this job. I’m totally dedicated to the work that we are doing in Australia’s name around the world, and I believe that we have achieved many good results for Australia, and I’m proud of them.

Kevin Rudd

I was born in Paris in the mid-1960s, and by the time I was 12 I had started going to the movies by myself. Most of the movies of that period never appealed to me. I didn’t like the ‘naturalism,’ the sad or the ‘down-to-earth’ characters. What I wanted from film was fantasy, dreams, funny situations, extravagant decor – and beautiful women.

Christian Louboutin

When I design and wonder what the point is, I think of someone having a bad time in their life. Maybe they are sad and they wake up and put on something I have made and it makes them feel just a bit better. So, in that sense, fashion is a little help in the life of a person. But only a little.

Miuccia Prada

One day, I was at my grandmother’s house, and I found diaries that she kept as a young girl. I opened one to a page that had flowers glued inside. In her childish handwriting, my grandmother wrote, ‘Pap died today. I am very sad.’ The fact that this was true and that I could see the withered flowers made a huge impression on me.

Laura Amy Schlitz

I think that when you make yourself vulnerable, the thing that you do next is better. It’s not like you have to inflict pain on yourself in order to make yourself better, but I think it helps. The thing that bonds you to a new friend isn’t that you went to a really fun party; it’s ’cause you had a really weird, sad conversation.

Tavi Gevinson

My experience, with both my parents, is that grief has a lot of down, sad things, but I was also really emotionally raw, in the first year after each of them passed. Flowers smelled more intensely, my relationships were hotter, and I was more willing to risk. I was going for it a lot more. I was ‘unsober’ and I wasn’t playing by my rules.

Mike Mills

I get kind of sad when I look at all of my magazines and think about how at one time I was much more impressed with a certain fashion editorial, or how I feel like I can’t really relate to being that excited about fashion anymore. Maybe it’s being jaded, but I honestly like that now, when something’s really good, I feel more affected by it.

Tavi Gevinson

I had often sought for the peace there is in Christ, but I could not seem to find the freedom I desired. A terrible sadness rested on my heart. I could not think of anything I had done to cause me to feel sad; but it seemed to me that I was not good enough to enter Heaven, that such a thing would be altogether too much for me to expect.
